Tours and Expeditions
Isla de Los Pajaros (Bird Island)
Situated just off the northern coast of Isla Colon, this island serves as a
very important nesting/resting site for several bird species that migrate
between North and South America. The island itself is comprised of large
rock faces and lush green landscape, with birds often clearly visible from
the boat; at certain times of the year it is possible to see offspring. The
island contains one large tunnel, which is often used for photographs
depicting the island; one can snorkel through the tunnel.
Bastimentos Island (National Park)
The western tip of Bastimentos Island lies just east of the town of Bocas
del Toro, clearly visible from the waterfront. The island of Bastimentos is
approximately the same size as Isla Colón, however, very little of it is
accessible. In fact, much of the island has been designated as a National
Park.
Bahia Honda
This tour starts with a boat ride to a small indian village, at which point
you'll get into a small Indian cayuco. You'll then proceed on a jungle
excursion, up river, for approximately one hour, during which time you might
see sloths, and a wide variety of other tropical animals. Upon reaching the
drop-off point, you'll enjoy a short 30 minute jungle hike.
Zapatillo Keys
These two beautiful islands are located on a coral platform that is defined,
toward the open sea, by the breakers that are formed as the waves crash on
the reef.
Zapatillas Keys are located inside the Bastimentos Island National Marine
Park.
They are famous for their beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, coral
reefs and small but shady forests. They are named after a fruit: the
zapatila.
The western island, Zapatillas Minor, is the occasional base of scientists
and conservationists, researchers of the marine turtle.
The leatherback and the hawksbill turtles also come to lay their eggs, in
season, on these beaches.
Coconut, banana, cocoa, mango, papaya and other assorted tropical fruit
farms are close by and available to visit and sample a variety of delicious
exotic fruits.
