Our snorkel excursions are sure to take your breath away! We tour to ideal locations and provide a boxed lunch along the way.
Bocas del DRAGO
Variant coral and the sandy sea bottom makes it easy to snorkel right off
the beach when the sea is calm. There is also great snorkeling in the
protected seas near Punta Rancho. Go by boat to the south and you will be
rewarded with large brain-coral heads that house entire mini-ecosystems for
many tropical fish. Water visibility ranges between 15-65 feet, with August
to October being the calmest. As of January 2005, there are no scuba diving
or snorkeling outfitters located in Boca del Drago itself.
The eastern side of the island faces the Caribbean Sea, which tends to be a
bit rougher and can only be accessed by boat from the Western side. Almost
all of the beaches are located down a beautiful path thru indigenous
species and wild pineapples.
The island's western side is lined with mangroves and enjoys calm water. If you
venture to Crawl Key or Zapatillas Islands your tour will most likely access
these points via the western side of The island itself contains a healthy
supply of wildlife, however your exposure to them is somewhat limited. White
faced and Howler monkeys are common, as are sloths and the ever so poplar
red poison arrow frogs. Bastimentos is by far the areas most popular tourist
destination, with most full day tours including a stop at either Crawl Key
or Hospital Point.
Crawl Cay
This is one of the most frequently visited destinations in Bocas del Toro,
located on the far side of the Bastimentos Island. Most photographs of Bocas
del Toro include a photograph of the restaurant that is located there, which
extends out over the water. Snorkeling is common here, as there
are numerous spots within a short distance.
Hospital Point
Just minutes by boat from the town of Bocas, this island point has some of
the areas bestsnorkeling and scuba diving. There is a 45ft. wall that hugs
the point, which goes all the way down to the channel that separates the
point from Isla Carenero. Along the side of the wall are several small
holes, where lobster and moray eel can be found.
The water is normally
clean, warm and shallow, however, the best months are during the dry season
which extends from August to October. Sea urchins, sea cucumbers, Angel
fish, Parrot fish and other colorful tropical fish are common sightings.
Most tours include Hospital Point as part of their full day tour, usually
saved for the end of the day.
